Wikipedia

While containing a plethora of information, Wikipedia is still given negative spotlight by professors. However, I find Wikipedia most useful in answering my day-to-day inquiries. How do pineapples grow? Well, I can type “pineapple wiki” into my search bar and my question will be answered in about 5 seconds. Useful, quick, and simple are adjectives that describe this data monster. Although, we cannot always count on Wikipedia for resourceful information, when double-checked the facts presented on the site are almost always accurate.

Aside from “wikipedia-ing” common day curiosities, I use Wikipedia as a platform for academics. When my teacher introduces a new subject such as “Nicomachean Ethics”, obviously in the core class Philosophical Ethics, I can use Wikipedia to find out more about the subject. I can even access Wikipedia from my IPhone, yes I did buy the .99 cent app., making information even more simple to retrieve. Even though the facts presented may sometimes be incorrect, they are usually retracted quite quickly. Thanks to Wikipedia, I am a more informed being with the capability to have my questions answered in the palm of my hands.

The YOUsefulness of YOUtube

It is quite likely that someone who says that they do not use youtube on an almost daily basis is lying. Youtube has definitely become one of the greatest inventions of the Internet in a relatively short amount of time. In my opinion, it is also one of the most accessible websites on the entire Web. Most new technology products manufactured these days come with youtube applications. Many cell phones even come with them. I do question why Apple is so supportive of youtube, with apps on ipods, iphones and ipads, since youtube seems to be making iTunes, one of Apple’s most successful products, nearly obsolete. As has been proven in earlier posts, many people these days simply do not use iTunes anymore, but instead employ youtube for almost all of their music needs. Youtube, at one point, was also contributing to the decline of live television viewing. One used to be able to watch full episodes of television shows, usually in a couple of parts, whenever they wanted on youtube. It is now harder to find complete episodes of shows on youtube because youtube has cracked down on television copyrights. However, I will say that when this was still allowed this was what I, personally, used youtube the most for. I liked it better than going to the network website for a show because on youtube there were no commercial breaks, whereas on a network website there are usually about five or six commercials. Since then, I have become more dependent on youtube for music, how-to videos, viral videos or other videos that have sparked public interest. I have also noticed that greater amounts of other websites often have links to youtube videos. This surprises me a bit because it directs people away from their website to youtube where one can find themselves watching videos or listening to music for hours.

New New Is Better

In the past 10 to 15 years mankind has made huge leaps in the advancement of hardware and software. What started off as the flip phone revolution quickly evolved into the keyboard/touch screen/ web surfing takeover. In 2003 I received my first cell phone. The present came on my birthday, and with my new flip phone, I felt like the coolest kid in school. Although there were no special features to the phone besides that it flipped, I thought it looked cool and was sensible for protecting the screen. Being just a 12-year-old boy, you wouldn’t imagine the phone being dropped ever however; I must admit that on the occasion that the phone jumped out of my hands, the screen was protected. Anyways, other than that the phone was a little pathetic compared to the hardware that’s available today.

As time has advanced so have personal devices that act as appendages to people nowadays. In 2007 the iphone revolution began. It was a sleek, small, and speedy little device. The touch screen phone had the capability of surfing the web, taking pictures, playing games, storing music, plus all the capabilities of an ordinary cell phone. The iphone raised the bar and set a standard for other phone companies to try and compete with. The iphone era made having a cell phone device be one of a person’s main priorities in life. I use my iphone constantly throughout the day. Whether it be to check my email/facebook, or to text or call a friend, I am always using this 6 inch device.

The technological advancements that have occurred in the past 10 years have certainly set a standard to be met, however, now the question is, “what’s next?” This phone phenomenon has taken over the world and has made everyone’s day-to-day life easier and more exciting. New New is better.
